First Church of Christ, Scientist, Philadelphia, PA

A Warm Welcome to Our Church

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
Psalms 133
Author

We are here for you and yours, and for the whole world. We invite you to attend services, bring children to Sunday School, visit our Reading Room, and become part of our Church family.

We are a Bible-based, Christian church focused on healing and based on the word and works of Christ Jesus and the teachings of Christian Science.  We welcome all seekers.

We are a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts.

Thus, we are part of the worldwide Christian Science movement founded by Mary Baker Eddy in New England more than a century ago.

A deeply devoted student of the Bible, Mrs. Eddy wrote and published our textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “to reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.”

Today, students throughout out the globe rely on Christian Science to grow spiritually, and to protect and heal themselves, their families, and the world.

History

This branch Church dates back to the early years of the 20th century and includes a long history of caring, sharing, and demonstrating the healing principles of Christian Science.

After its preliminary years of organizing, First Church of Christ, Scientist, Philadelphia held its initial services in June 1910 in a large new edifice in West Philadelphia. In the 1990’s First and Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist combined to form a new church entity embracing Center City and West Philadelphia, and located in Fifth Church’s historic building on Pine Street in Center City.

In 2013, this building was sold and temporary quarters secured. In 2015 the Church relocated to the Society Hill/Independence Hall neighborhood to another historic building.

After complete remodeling, this facility provides light, peace, harmony and a welcoming atmosphere to visitors and members. It includes an auditorium for services, together with a Sunday School and Christian Science Reading Room.

Sunday Service

With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Psalm 119
Author

Our services bring inspiration and healing, and share the teachings of the Bible and Christ Jesus and their application to daily life.

The sermon consists of citations from the Bible, and our textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy. They are read by a First Reader and Second Reader, elected annually by our members. The citations can be studied each week in the Christian Science Quarterly.

At our Sunday services you will also be inspired by piano and organ music, a solo, and three hymns sung by the congregation.

Hymns and music are also a part of each service.

In our Sunday School– children up to the age of 20 learn the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Sermon on the Mount, and how to apply their lessons at school and home.

You are welcome to bring children in your family or neighborhood to our Sunday School.
